Students need to be in classrooms that inspire them—spaces that are light, airy, and filled with examples of work that they aspire to do. I use colors that have been shown to make students feel more calm. Additionally, Plants, soft chairs, rugs, and pillows can help to add warmth and comfort to the class environment (Rutter, Maughan, Mortimore, & Ouston, 1979).
While decorations help create a warm environment, organization of the furniture in the room is also important. There should be enough space for all students to easily move throughout the classroom. My grouping of desks offers several benefits including encouraging cooperative learning, building a sense of class community, and making the best use of the space. Students have a variety of seating options options to choose from including floor seats, balance disks, a bean bag, balance balls, stools, crate seats, a saucer chair, love seat, and more.
